A message from the Vice President...
Thank you to all of the members
who participated in the print competition last month. What
a great turn out! We had over 50 prints to be judged. The
overall quality of the prints was terrific. I have seen
such impressive improvements in the images. Hopefully this
also improves the bottom line!
Thank you also to Dave Samples,
Master Photographer, for his expertise in judging our prints.
The introductory Power Point show was very informative,
with explanations and sample images to bring home the points.
Thank you too, for all the help
from the print committee, both regular members and last
minute volunteers. It is all of us working together that
makes this organization so strong. Look for your president's
message in this spot next month. He was visiting a new grand-baby!
Success in all you pursue
pat.
THIS MONTH'S SPEAKERS:
DAVE FOWLER & KATIE ARNDT
Fowler Photography, Ogallala, Nebraska
"Digital Tips and Tricks"
This informative program covers file
management, workflow, color mgt., in-studio proofing retouching,
dust spotting, special effects, soft focus techniques, and
how to do multi-image collages. The techniques you will
learn on how to do dust spotting will be worth more than
the cost of the entire program.
Dave has been in the photography
business for over 30 years. He entered his first print competition
in 1991 and earned his Master of Photography Degree in 1997
and his Master Craftsman Degree in 2001. With the exception
of two "scenic" images, all of his print merits
came from customer files. Fowler has had two Loan Prints,
one EPCOT Center print and one of only 36 images accepted
for display at the 1997 International Photokina Exhibit
in Cologne, Germany. See www.fowlerphotography.com
for more award details.
Fowler has presented programs
in Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Wyoming, Colorado and
South Dakota. He has also taught three different Super Monday
digital programs.
Fowler started working with digital
in 1997 scanning proofs and doing special effects for seniors.
Since that time he has graduated to being a full digital
studio. The studio does an average of 150 seniors per year
all digital. Learn more from this master this month.
Katie has been a digital artist
with Fowler Photography for 3 years. In addition to the
normal workflow duties, Katie produces all the proof-books
in-house on the XEROX 8200 printer, and does all the digital
color correction, retouching and print-ordering through
the up-link to the lab. Katie has discovered and developed
many unique and artistic ways to do digital special effects
and multi-image creations. Her special-effects ability earned
the studio over $10,000 in creation fees for the studio
in 2002.
Katie is also responsible for
wedding and some of the children's photography at the studio.
In her first folio competition at the PPN Winter Conference
she won 1st Place and a Judge's Ribbon in the Open Class
plus a 1st and 2nd Place in the Children's category.
In her first PPA Print Competition
at HOA this year she hung all four of her prints, had one
image selected for the PPA Loan Collection, received the
Novice of the Year Award and placed 2nd in Nebraska's Top
Ten Non-Master Photographer's List.
October Member Profile: Herb Wetzel
Herb Wetzel joined the Guild a year ago as a
newcomer to the professional photographer community in Colorado
Springs. Living in Monument with his wife and 3 children,
Herb works his photography business from a 500 square foot
home studio and 2.5 acre outdoor lot.
"I have everything around
me that inspires me the most; my family, my home, my guitar,
and a wonderful customer base in this town."
Moving to Monument from Denver
7 years ago, Herb bought his first medium format cameras
from another local photographer selling out of the business.
That launched his part time career into portrait photography.
"I started taking pictures
before high school and seemed to always have a camera around
my neck growing up in a small town in Virginia. In college
I shot for the yearbook staff and worked up to head photographer
with a staff of 5 shooting all that happened on campus daily."
That foundation of photographing
people and working with deadlines gave Herb what he needed
in today's fast paced world of senior and wedding photography.
"My plan is to concentrate
on seniors, weddings, and family portraiture. I also shoot
commercially for brochures, web sites, real estate property
magazines like Christies Fine Estates, and Air Force Falcon
football games."
His other business as a printing
broker provides the majority of his income. This year marks
Herb's 20th year in the printing industry.
"I market printed brochures,
magazines, and other 4 color printing to area businesses.
Printing and photography go hand in hand creatively. Membership
in the Guild has taught me how to make better images, set
pricing for a profitable business, and learn from the finest
photographers in Southern Colorado. I look forward to improving
with each Guild meeting and training opportunity."
