A message from the President

Here come the Holidays. The Holiday Party is set for January 9, 2004, so start making your plans. Can't believe this year has gone so fast! We have had some great meetings this year. I think our last one was probably one of the best. I know I learned a lot. And some of the things I learned we have implemented at the studio and they are making money. We have some great speakers still to go this year and coming in the new year.

This past year has seen much growth in the Guild and several returning members from the past. We are hoping to see several new members from Pueblo next year. This is fun! It is nice to have new friends in the industry.

I wanted to thank Pat and Herb for making the newsletter happen. It has been a bumpy road this year trying to coordinate everything and then it seemed like everyone we got going as our editor would have to drop out.

Our next meeting will be November 20th. Our December meeting will be December 19th and will be a studio tour.

Pat and Brian are working on getting our software up to speed so that we have everyone's correct information. This will help at meetings for our sign-in sheet. Please be sure to check at the next meeting to see if you have you in our data base correctly.

We are still trying to get everyone a name tag. Joyce got several ready for the last meeting. If you are still in need of a name tag, be sure to let one of the greeters know at the next meeting.

-Greg Garrett

This Month's Speaker:
Dave Black
"Going Digital"

"I love to make photographs. It is as simple as that. I love to make photographs that draw the audience into a captured moment in time.

My Education in graphic design and studio drawing lends itself perfectly to this idea of not only capturing the moment, but to do so in such a way that it draws the audience in for a longer and closer look.

While the moment attracts the attention of the viewer, my goal is to hold their attention as well. It is the perfection of the use of light, shadows, background and color, combined with high resolution quality that will keep the audience. I approach each image with these principals in mind.

Always striving for perfection means always learning. They are one in the same. One of the best ways to learn is to teach. I have been instructing workshops and lecturing about photography since 1986. Lately, the hot topic has been digital. I have been using digital exclusively since 1999 and I am convinced of its benefits to both the photographer and the client.

Today the photographic industry is in a wonderful transition. Photographers can produce better quality and have more options to create new and exciting images while the client can enjoy those same advancements and faster production. We all win."

Dave's work has appeared in a variety of magazines such as Sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek, ESPN, Parade and The Wall Street Journal. And with such publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Bantam Double Day, Pindor Press, Hyperion, Scribner, and Broadway.   Some of his clients include Chevy, McDonalds, Reebok, Hallmark, Coca Cola, Visa, Johnson & Johnson, Nikon, Kodak, NFL Properties, and The United States Olympic Committee.

Nominations 2004

NOW is the time to start thinking about next year's board of directors. We are looking for those willing to donate about 2 hours of time a month. The various openings will be announced at the next meeting. Please search your appointment books and be willing to help out the organization.

Attention ! !

The PPGCS is proud to announce the recent decision of the Board to allow a special membership rate for students. You may join the Guild for only $25 per year! This reduced rate includes all general meetings available to regular members, but does not include a chance to win the drawings for any scholarships at the annual party in January. If you can provide proof that you are a full time student, you can take advantage of this great new membership fee. Call a board member for more information.
