A message from the President
This will be a short one since
our Studio History is included in this month's letter. Dave
Black was a real WOW meeting. I think that was probably
the longest question and answer session we have ever had.
Great meeting.
It is time to give a very special
thanks to Eric for the job he is doing with our newsletter
and web site. I get a lot of comments on how great our site
is. Eric is a one man army when it comes to maintaining
our site and formatting and launching our e-newsletter.
Thanks Eric.

Member Profile
AL JOSEPH PHOTOGRAPHY
Al Joseph Photography was started
in 1982 by Al Joseph Lucero. Over the years the studio built
a reputation for providing quality portraits for families,
business people and High School Seniors. Upon deciding to
go into semi-retirement, Mr. Lucero listed the studio for
sale with a local business broker. About the same time,
Greg Garrett decided to take the advice of friends and relatives
encouraging him to become a professional photographer. Greg
had been winning awards for his talents in photography for
many years. Greg and his wife, Joyce, were looking for a
photography-related business in Colorado Springs in hopes
of relocating their family of five from New Mexico. As many
other folks, the Garretts had fallen in love with Colorado
Springs.
The business was purchased in
September 1996, and the Garretts moved their three teenagers
to town, enrolling them at Air Academy High School.
Greg
and Al worked together for several weeks after the purchase
to ensure a smooth transition. In the time since, Greg has
made a concerted effort to build on his previous knowledge
and talents in photography by further study. He is always
learning about cutting-edge creative ideas and technologies
through courses offered by professional organizations. Greg
keeps abreast of the many changes in the industry with the
arrival of digital photography. Both Greg and Joyce learned
(by experience) the many facets of business ownership and
operations. Joyce relies on her varied previous experience
to serve as Customer Service and Sales Manager as well as
Public Relations Liaison. She also enjoys serving as AJPs
journalistic black and white photographer for weddings.
The Garretts rely on one to three
employees to assist them with studio customer service, sales
and other duties. In September 1998 the Garrett family suffered
the tragic loss of their 17-year-old son, Wayne, in a small
airplane crash East of Colorado Springs. Megan Koelle, the
Garretts assistant at the time (also a teenager) held
the operation together during the busy High School Senior
season while the couple dealt with their loss. One of the
ways the Garretts get along without Wayne is to hold on
to the opportunity to help other families to stay together
forever in beautiful portraits. The couple has not changed
in one aspect of their service
.they still enjoy getting
to know the 16 and 17 year old clients they serve so often.
In the spring of 2000 Greg earned
his CPP (Certified Professional Photographer) status with
the Professional Photographers of America. It is not uncommon
for those taking this certification exam to need more than
one try to pass. Greg passed the exam with an exemplary
score the first time, then provided the required samples
of his work and references to the PPA. He was then awarded
his certification.
Greg and Joyce have served on
the Board of Directors for the Professional Photographers
Guild of Colorado Springs. Greg served as an officer for
two years and became the President of the organization in
2003. The Garretts enjoy the continuing education and friendly
association with other photographers available through this
group.
Over the years, Greg and Joyce
have made physical improvements to the studio still located
in the Old Depot Square shopping center on Sierra Madre
Street. They enjoy having a nice park and fun urban settings
just outside their door in the charming shopping center.
High School Seniors especially enjoy these unique backgrounds
for their outdoor poses. Greg took the studio into the digital
world by converting most of their sessions to this technology
in the spring of 2003. The Garretts have added more Commercial
Photography, Events and Dance Schools to their repertoire,
while still specializing in
portraits
of Families and High School Seniors.
As the Garretts enjoy serving
and getting to know other families and businesses in the
area, they have seen their own family mature. Their daughter
(Waynes twin) has married and pursues a career with
a local bank. Their oldest son is married and serves our
country as an Air Force firefighter in Georgia. He and his
wife made Greg and Joyce grandparents with the August 2003
birth of a son.
The Garretts implemented a new
marketing plan in the fall of 2003 which is assisting them
in continuing to grow AJP for years to come. Their entrepreneurial
spirit and commitment to community inspire them to do great
things in the future.
