12. The 2004 PPGCS Board of Directors

A message from the President

Well if you missed our January meeting, you missed a good one on lighting and portrait/family work. Thanks to Master Photographer, Rick Avalos for educating the Guild on how to create beautiful wall portraits.
The Rocky Mountain Professional Photographer's of America Convention is coming to Colorado Springs from March 12-14,2004, and PPGCS has always been a major part of this convention. In helping to give judges a ride from/to the Springs Airport, Print Competition, and helping the speakers setup it need be. Without question, the RMPPA Convention has been the biggest help in my photography. I have learned more from helping in with the Print Competition than any critiques I attended. By being involved, you will be rewarded ,many times over in just a few days.

If you've never been to RMPPA, you’ve got to come!! This will be the last time it will be held in Colorado Springs for the next three years. And with this year’s talent right in our own back year... well it doesn't get any better than this. What a great line-up of speakers, just in-creditable!! So keep the afternoon open starting on March 11 to be a volunteer in either picking up a judge or help unpack the print cases for the Print Competition. You'll get to see them before everyone else does. Go to www.RMPPA.com and check it out!!

PPGCS President,
Thomas J. Henn, PPA Certified, M.Photog

Member Profile

Mark Kirkland

I was a jeweler and jewelry designer for 25 years and photography was my primary hobby. Then the digital camera was invented. Wow, what a powerful marketing tool. I could send a customer home with photos of the jewelry she wanted with the text “Honey, I went, I saw, I want!”

The best part was that I could photograph new pieces for my portfolio and see immediately if the lighting was good and the focus was sharp

Back then no one knew anything about digital imaging. I had to do a lot of experimenting and digging to find solutions for digital workflow problems. In 2000 I changed professions and went to work for Shewmaker’s Camera. I started teaching classes on photography and digital photography. I found that there was renaissance of photographers that had not touched their cameras in years. They all wanted to know what I knew about digital imaging.

After a couple years I opened a photography gallery in Old Colorado City and closed it a year later due to the Hayman fire and 911.

That is when I came to work at Accent Photo Imaging. I have made it my mission to learn as much as I could about Photoshop and digital imaging here.

Now I am working in Photoshop every day and teaching classes in the evenings. I have chosen wildlife as my specialty and I am represented in several galleries. I am working hard this year to get published in more national publications and having some success.

I lead Bear Photography Workshops up in Alaska every summer, and I give Ethical Wildlife Photography workshops to groups and organizations.
